Solved - Template file has no effect

I've set up a Prestashop 1.4.5 demo to experiment with - I am trying to change the way the product list displays in category listings in the default theme.

 

Editing the relevant product-list.css file works fine, however, when I edit the product-list.tpl file nothing changes, in fact I've used a blank file and product list still displays in the default way. If I delete the product-list.tpl file, the product list disappears.

 

What I aiming to do is remove the image, available label, view button the compare box, and edit the truncate function to give longer titles - but no matter what I do nothing changes.

 

I'd be grateful for any help on this.

Turn on force compile and off cache in preferences>performance. Also please try and use the search as this question is asked a lot

Thanks for that it's something I haven't come across before.

 

I did try to search for an answer before posting but was unable to find an answer.
