<SOLVEED> What is Leverage browser caching?

Recommended Posts

Hello Friends,

I like to know what is the meaning of Leverage browser caching? Also how to use it? I am using prestashop 1.3.5.0. Does that is available in this version?

Also webpage speed test says "cacheable resources have a short freshness lifetime. Specify an expiration at least one week in the future for the resources"

Can anyone guide me how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Vilas

It means take advantage of the fact that the browsers are able to cache properly served resources. Your web site is the heavy item, browser caching is the lever.

Also how to use it?

There are various ways. Cache related response headers, expires headers, web server modules, PHP settings, ETags, etc etc.

Leveraging caching as Google puts it It has nothing to do with PrestaShop, though the way web application is designed can make it easier. Here is a link to get you started on the subject of caching

Dear Friend,

Thanks for prompt response. But now I am getting many errors while testing my sites. Here is one-two e.g.

I have tested my site with http://siteloadtest.com/

Errors:

<p class="report_red">

  • Freshness lifetime (Cache-Control): 14400 sec, 0% of recommended one month.
  • Freshness lifetime (Cache-Control): 14400 sec, 0% of recommended one month.
  • Freshness lifetime (Cache-Control): 14400 sec, 0% of recommended one month.

Do you know why such errors its showing? Could you please test from your end ? My site

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Vilas

First of all, do not pay too much attention to what a third party algorithm is saying about your website. There is no single magic setting suitable for all sites and those third party sites cannot know the requirements of your specific domain.

Test this, go to the same site and put in www.amazon.com (or another one of big 10) and test it, it will come up with a bunch of errors. If siteloadtest had an algorithm that judges what is good for amazon better than amazon can, then they would be one of the big 10 and would not need to display the ads they are displaying now.

Freshness lifetime (Cache-Control): 14400 sec, 0% of recommended one month.

This specific message complaining that the cache control value in the response headers are less than 1 month (in seconds). So it is currently 14400 and they want it to be 2592000

What this means is that any caching agent, whether a proxy, caching server, or browser will cache that resource (subject to other conditions) for a month.

However, do not follow blindly the advise of a generic algorithm to decide a caching policy. There are a lot of resources on the internet, read and learn or seek professional advise. Caching policy for your domain is like returns policy of your shop, you cannot just put in place arbitrary practices and hope for the best.

An immediate improvement you could make is to turn on performance tweaks (Back office > Preferences > Performance). Other than that there is no magic setting to make the site more responsive. There are lots of things can be done. Use better hardware for hosting, select a better hosting package, use content delivery networks for static content, use media servers, reduce the number of images and gimmicks on the home page.

Search through the forums, for phrase "slow" in topic titles. There are several threads Make use of any suggestions made there. Beyond that, each site has to be individually assessed and this is not a 10 minute job. Seek professional help. That is all I know.

Is Ferrari faster than Ford if I was driving the Ferrari and Michael Schumacher was driving the Ford? Here the Google is your friend so you can make up your own mind rather than relying on some arbitrary observation.

Alternatively, I have a 150 pages study prepared for a previous client on PrestaShop v. Magento performance in various hosting environments and using different inventories. You can have a copy, for $2500.

I am using ps 1.3.5 Version.

This is a version no longer supported. I would try the latest version before making up my mind.
