What you can do, get ps9 which at this time is early releases.  Community tested, is silly so we see many posts now on ps9, really every new release with lot's of basic errros...ths hurts reputation if business considering ps but stumble on to the forum.  

If you have idea of feature for ecommerce, that is not aleady available in ps module eco....learn how to create it....put to addons, make a splash into ps.

as ps got it's liver ate, like others by shopify.  there are 'very' few good developers left,

ps abandonded the US market some time ago....that was big mistake...

with ps now owned by another company, though they kept uppity up...but the general direction is to  shopify checkout...I've watched them do it, but again for French, good devlopers but lazy, i.e. they rely on community to test and then report on github, 95% of community does not know what github is.

so what to do?  look at major US sites, walmart.com, amazon, newegg etc.  beause most EU developers do not use these maybe amazon, they really don't know see cutting edge eommerce.  so there, you go hey  that feature is freaking cool...does not exist in prestashop, or other ecommerce..build a solution for other platforms with that feature...

also you can contact agencies in ps, or others for freelance work, see if they intern you.

I have very good regard for Polish developers, with ps still popular there....and you bring something to the tabe, new feature(s)...back to github, if you decide to install and test ps, report on github...ps does not look at forum unless US'er argues with the French looool....

mypresta.eu is best dev in Poland for ps...really best dev long time with talk to  the hand attitude, which I like
