Guest Account awkwardness

I am using PS 1.7.8

 

and have Guest Checkout enabled as an option, however it's getting very annoying with many customers registering an account after they've placed a guest order, to try and view their order details; and them not being able to see their order details.

 

I think if someone places a guest order under an email address, and then registers an account under the same email address; that the order should automatically merged with their new customer account.

 

As now I have duplicate accounts for the same email address, with the orders not linked, and emails from customers complaining they can't see their order in their account.

 

Just wondering is this a problem for anyone else too? Has anyone got any ideas on how to help fix this, without disabling guest checkout? Some people really like to order as a guest (even if they make an account a few days later)
