admin only product fields

I have a supplier that has a filed in their product file for special; instructions about certain products that are for admin only and are important to their products.  I can find a way to get them into the product files.  I don't want to go edit a bunch of core files as that will get stepped on in an update.  So has anyone found a way to do something similar?  I am in the US so there is no need for the EAN13 field, but I don't know how to change the format of what goes in there to be general text.

A simple module should do the trick. Create separate table to store this in database and display it on admin product page. 
Use this hook displayAdminProductsMainStepLeftColumnBottom to display textfield or textarea under product featureson edit page of product.
