Generating Combinations

I have a products that I am now setting up on my store and they have combinations such as colour, software type, etc

In total I have 17 different options.  I add them all to the product and hit generate.

On the website front end it looks fine.  In the admin panel it has generated more than 17.  more like 100.  Its crazy.

Anyone else have this.  Its annoying and impossible to manage from the back end

Let me try to explain.  As i understand it you have to add all options to a product at once because if you add them one at a time only the first one will show on the product page.

Example

So I added Colour and generated,  Then I added edge and generated

When you look at the store only the colour is showing

But,  how the combinations show in the back end is what I would expect them to look like.  I can add a price to lets say Edge Black.  easy right....

So we have established that if you add a combo and generate it,  and then add another combo and generate it only the first one shows on the product page.

So lets add them all at once and see what happens.  In total I should see 17 combinations in the back admin section as per example.

But no.  When I click generate I get 100s of them.  I can't actually grab them in a screen shot as there are to many but here is a sample.

All that looks crap because how the hell am I supposed to maintain this.  Which one do I select to add a price to when a customer selected it.  The product page on the website looks fine.

Surely someone else has come across this.  Its stupid the way this works

This is perfectly fine and logical math.
You have three different attributes.
In the first you choose 3 options (green, red, blue), in the second you choose 5 options and in the third you choose 7 options.
The number of combinations is a multiple of all the number of possibilities.

3 * 5 * 7 = 105

There are e-shops that have many more combinations.

The solution is to create subcategories and then create combinations.

For example, you create subcategories green, red and blue.

And you can only generate from two groups of attributes.

5 * 7 = 35
