How to get the 404.gif on 404 images with PrestaShop 1.7?

I’m new to PrestaShop. If I understand correctly, in PrestaShop 1.6 the PageNotFoundController had some specialized behavior using regexps on the URL to return a 404.gif when the URL of an image was not found. In 1.7 (I’m using 1.7.8.5) this looks like it’s gone: I get an HTML 404 page when I query a non-existent image.

How can I add this behavior back?
