How to show parent categories and not sub categories

Hello everyone,

I'm setting up my 1.7.7.1 after and whilst all is going well i can't seem to find a way to show only the parent and first sub categories in the dropdown.

As in my shop there are 3 layers of categories and i only want to show the first two other wise it will show a massive amount of subs.

The layout is (Root) Parts > Make > Model > Part category  I only want the drop down in to show Make & Model, not the 7 sub categories afterwards.

 

In ps_mainmenu it's rather simple i can only select which pages or categories to add, but not how far it displays those categories. 

And in the actual categories section you can enable or disable, not effect there visibility in the drop down on the main menu.

 

I've been googling and searching the forum for two hours but can't get a fix or suggestion.
