modifying the product.tpl parser

I want to change the way products are displayed. But I simply cannot find where the file catalog/_partials/miniatures/product.tpl is being used.
Thus that I can add extra variables to display on my page.

I hope that one can en-light me.

I can now only find some smarty created PHP cache files. But for what I understand this is not a good idea to modify since these can be discarded the first coming cache flush.
