Different image sizes per category

Is it possible to have different image sizes in different categories? I can't seem to find a way to make this work.

For example, I would like to have larger images display in a clothes category list (to show the detail of the clothes BEFORE the customer clicks into the product page), and smaller images in an accessories page.

Additionally, is it possible to have the image zoom in when clicked from the category page, and only go to the product page when the customer clicks the "View" button or product text? Currently clicking the image goes to the product page.
I'm guessing this is a Theme issue more than a BO setting?
