I discovered that we needed to use the Main (primary)  domain's username/pwd to get emails working .
Also if the mail server is not on the same server account/primary domain as the website:

Add an SPF record to the DNS hosting for the VPS .
After adding the record, it may take 4-12 hours for DNS propagation.
