categories disappearing for customer group

Hi,

I just set up a new customer group offering 10% discount.
When a customer assigned to this group logs in, the categories box disappears, the only items accessible are the featured products on the homepage. If one of the featured products is selected, it will be visible as normal, however if I click on the category link just above the product description the following error message appears:

There is 1 error :
you do not have access to this category

I can't find any place where access can be set for customer groups.
Is this a bug? Does anyone have any idea?
