Is Prestashop a webdesign platform? Is it really free?

Recommended Posts

Our company is looking into options for creating an e-commerce website. We have dreamweaver installed, but are new to the web design game. Do you already need to have a webpage built in order to use Prestashop or is Prestashop a web design platform? I guess I am confused with all the templates.

Thanks for your reply....I am still trying to find out how to make and upload a e-commerce site. What do I need along with PrestaShop to make it work? Servers? other software? html/coding skills?

Hi there,

Presta is a complete, or nearly complete e-commerce platform, by platform meaning it is a script or program that dynamically creates web pages as needed. Example is that each item is it's own page technically. In order to get Presta or any other ecommerce script implemented you need a web server, if you are going to accept your own credit cards via your merchant account then you will also need a secure certificate for your server. Once you have the server you install and set up presta on your server and it really is close to go right out of the box except for having to put in your business info and product info.

The dreamweaver and photoshop programs and the know how comes in when you are wanting to make the site look differently than it is when you install it. You can change the look and feel of the program by purchasing or making templates. With a little programming know how you can also get it to do other things such as display different pages or styles depending on what category or item is currently being displayed, among many other things.

Technically it is possible to simply create the database through your sever, unzip the file onto your server and install the program. The default template is ready to go and all you have left to do is fill in the company info and products and you are ready to go...

Hope this helps....if you have further questions or need help just let me know

How do I get a host server? GoDaddy.com?

GoDaddy, for example. Although I don't have any experience with them.
There are many; have a look at www.webhostingtalk.com to get an idea of it.

You'll generally want to get a server in your geographic area for speed and support-reasons, but for a starting site, any $5+ / month server will do, really (unless you run Magento. But then you wouldn't be here)
(Word of advice: don't get tempted into those "$1 per year! Unlimited data!" offers: they're generally pretty bad at support and over overbooked, causing slow accessibility at peak times. Look for a decent company decent pricing that's been in the business at least 4+ years)

I suggest not using GoDaddy for hosting, I have heard of nothing but problems with it (they're probably overloaded). Also, you'll want to download WAMP and test your site locally before making it "live".

This is hearsay as I have not witnessed it for myself but the going rant about godaddy servers are that there are in excess of 3 thousand to as many as 13 thousand users per single server. If you are getting a conventional hosting package this means a single machine is serving all of these thousands of different users simultaneously. If a number of these users happen to mistakenly install a cpu intensive script, have a drastic and swift upsurge in traffic or anything else everyone on that machine suffers though I am sure their limitations go into effect automatically it is just the way the system is set up hosting so many on a single machine over 50% load capacity all the time is a bad thing. The best thing to look for is Cloud Hosting, that is where several machines are serving a single node, the single node could be seen as godaddy's single machine except with 3+ times the resources, if a machine goes down, a client takes up above average resources the other machines automatically begin serving the remaining clients. This of course is an over simplification, but knowing what constant load they allow per node or machine is an important question to ask.
