List all products in subcategories OR create a category which isn't shown inthe categories block

Hi,

I want to either list all products in subcategories of a top level category without displaying the subcategory names/ images on a single page (it's a clothes shop, so display either ALL GIRLS or ALL BOYS clothes)

OR create a category which isn't shown in the categories block to which I can assign all of the products for either boys or girls. I can set up such a category & set it not to display, but this results in a "There is no product in this category." error. I would then link to this category from the front page, but I don't want it to display in the categories block.
