create a new field in the product table of database

Hi everbody,

I am working on my website and for some reasons i need to create a new field in the product database. this field will be called "reference_root" and will be a filled by an php-exploded version of the reference data.
For exemple when i ll create a product , i ll put as reference for it: smallchair01-black, and a php script will automatically explode this reference and keep the part (smallchair01) before "-" character and insert it in the reference_root field of the product table.


my question is : Where is the part of the code which insert reference in the database, and update it...i can't really find it...same question for arguments?
