Attribute Combinations

Need some help:

When i try to input a new product with for instance 4 colors by choice,

say: red, green, yellow, blue, purple, orange, black and white.

then the shop is generating a product for every possibility there is.

ending up with 8 times 8 times 8 times 8 = 4096 products.

Is there a way so bypass this, but still let the customer make a choice of 4 times one color?

 

this is just an example.

as you can see, with all these combinations, the database says it's not responding anymore, because the amount of products it has to generate is in the millions.

 

HELP!

 

Hope somebody can give me an answer.
