How to manage which elements appear in left column

I searched forums for a solution to this for hours, but I'm still completely puzzled.

 

I simply want to manage which elements appear in the left column of the default theme.

I have 10 modules in Modules->Positions->displayLeftColumn, apparently all active (I didn't touch anything there, see screenshot), but on Categories pages only "Information" appears and on search results pages 3 modules appear "Categories" "Information" "My account".

 

Note in case that's important: I use a Category as my homepage

Hi

Click on 'Edit" button after a page will appear. On this page you can chose wich page to exclude. By default the module will appear on the leftColumn on all page wich implement this hook . Thnanks

I tried that, but, for example, if I click on Edit for Categories block, no page is excluded (screenshot 1), so it should show up on every page, but it doesn't on Categories pages (screenshot 2)
