2x images... not there, and why being called on a non-retina display?

Recommended Posts

So I just put my site live-ish (its on a public server available to anyone but its not really the one meant for my customers yet).

The first person I had test it out told me they couldn't see most of the product pages.  They were served ? images instead.  They looked fine to me.  I had them copy the url being served up for the image, and I see their browser is asking for (for example)

/store/19-home_default_2x/image.jpg

while mine is:

/store/19-home_default/image.jpg

Ok, that shows I don't have my images set up right and I'm sure I can fix that... but what is really puzzling is WHY they are being shown the 2x!?  This person is on a low-end consumer level bought-it-from-costco-for-$400 desktop Windows 8 PC.  Certainly not a high end Apple with Retina display.

What gives?
