Italic text in product description, bug?

I'm unable to add some italicised text to my product description (the "more info" one). The markup shows the words are wrapped in <em> tags but they are being styled to normal.

 

I can fix this by deleting the <em> selector in the large style rule at the top of global.css since it appears to be the "inherit" rule that is causing the issue.

 

Is this a bug or am I trying to fix this issue with a hack that is actually being caused by me elsewhere? 

 

A new installation of the latest version, not messed with any css files yet.
