Cart is missing, blank pages, after clear cache and force compile

Hello,

On one of our sites we cleared cache and forced compile and now get the message:

 

"Impossible to add the product to the cart.
textStatus: 'error'
errorThrown: 'Internal Server Error'
responseText:"

 

when trying to add an item to the cart and cart pages as well as some back office pages are coming up blank. The site was working over the weekend and we received a few orders, the only change we did today was clear cache and force compile. On Friday we also changed chown to allow google sitemap module to work based on a recommendation on these forums and then changed chown back as per that discussion and now it seems folder permissions arent correct either. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?
