Generate image with PNG or JPEG format ?

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

There is an option in BO -> Preference -> images -> IMAGES GENERATION OPTIONS

Generate image with PNG or JPEG format.

I tried both. Both generate image into file with JPG extension in img/p.... directory. Only difference is the file size is much larger when PNG format is selected.

I wondered if they are actually in PNG format ?!

Also, when regenerate image, e.g. thickbox_default. I remember there is only one file in img/p/1/4/8/7/1487 thickbox_default.jpg. Buy now, there is extra one call img/p/1/4/8/7/1487-thickbox_default-jwj5UMuELi.jpg

p.s. I am using p.s. 1.6.0.14 and with chinese and english language translation.

Thanks in advance.

David

Hey

regarding the image format option: It depends what kind of images you are using. As it says in the backoffice just over this option

JPEG images have a small file size and standard quality. PNG images have a larger file size, a higher quality and support transparency. Note that in all cases the image files will have the .jpg extension.

WARNING: This feature may not be compatible with your theme, or with some of your modules. In particular, PNG mode is not compatible with the Watermark module. If you encounter any issues, turn it off by selecting "Use JPEG".

So if you are using only .jpg select: "Use JPEG"

If you use both select: "Use PNG only if the base image is in PNG format"  (this is useful if you have some images with transparency)

I never would select option three since it just makes the files to big. Bad for SEO and performance.

Thx. For pointing out. I overlooked it.

Do you have any idea about the second partlso, when regenerate image, e.g. thickbox_default. I remember there is only one file in img/p/1/4/8/7/1487 thickbox_default.jpg. But now, there is extra one call img/p/1/4/8/7/1487-thickbox_default-jwj5UMuELi.jpg

With extra scrabbled letters...same image/content.

Thx again

Look at the creation date of the files, which one is older and when they got changed. Might be some kind of backup.

Thanks for your hints.

When the folder is empty (I deleted them all except original file in testing environment), no such kind of files. If there are some files, the file with scrambled letters produced. However, the file size are different (see screen shot attached). The best guess would be backup at this point.

Anyway, many thanks for your prompt response and helpful information.

Cheers
