slightly killed my shop by editing defines.inc.php

im a bit of a newbie so please talk to me as you would a child!

 

so i have been gradually implementing my shop, added a new theme, some products and some shipping carriers and then the standard paypal.

 after a couple of tests using the paypal it suddenly just started showing a blank page after clicking express checkout, so after googling i found i could turn on error reporting by editing the ('_PS_MODE_DEV_', false) to true in defines.inc.php

i did this using "edit in rich text" in my hosting file manager.

 

this is where the real propblems came, now both my shop AND back office now just display part of the defines.inc.php text as follows-

I did also have a couple of other problems earlier, not sure if they are related?-

 the email address i used when purchasing test items would recieve multiples of the alert emails ie; about 12 "payment accepted " emails, same for the welcome to our store and the password confirmations when using the forgoten password feature to get a new password.

never mind, just installed an new shop to a different folder then copied over the defines.inc.php which seems to have worked.

 

any ideas on the multiple emails thing would be helpful.
