Creating Test store

I have been brought in as an assistant web developer for the shop of a friend of mine.  He has made a backup of his current shop, and given me a test address .../test while his store is on ..../store.

 

To set up the backup in the new test environment, I need access to phpMyAdmin, and he won't grant me access until he knows what would happen to his currently live shop.  I am unable to find any information as of yet searching through the forums here.  Any suggestions for where to look, or advice will be greatly appreciated.
