Categories using ID numbers

I'm hoping that anyone out there has setup categories that have alpha-numeric names, but are sent down using the sub-category number to be identified by......I'm needing help with setting this up for nightly downloads to update my pricing and quanities......I can send the file over that has all the information if someone knows how to get this to work somehow, When trying to open this file, use Excel and it's using the pipe delimiter.................that'll get it so you be able to understand it better then.
