What the hey just happened to my site!?

I just pulled up my test subdomain and all the css changes I made to it are gone!! I was just about to go live! This is a replacement site for another live site currently in use. It's supposed to be an upgrade!! What is this?

 

A few days ago I upgraded from 1.5.6 to 1.5.6.1 but saw no changes, even after hard refresh. Then this morning.....disaster!!

 

I downloaded backup files to my desktop before upgrading. Do I have to reinstall?

 

Why did this happen? I can't afford to have things like this happen out of the blue, not with orders coming in. Does anyone have an idea why this happened, and if crazy things like this are a regular occurrence?

I have recent backups, but need advice on how to install them to replace what is already there.

I deleted my files and reloaded from a backup. I got my css mods back, but now every link on the home page gives a 404 error!? Any ideas?

OK......I'm totally freaked out. My whole site is back. Everything appears to work again. But I don't know what happened or why all the problems went away.

 

This is what I have done since I discovered the problems this morning:

 

-deleted and reloaded files. This returned my css mods, but no links on the home page worked.

 

-then I changed config/defines.inc.php set PS_MODE_DEV to true!

 

I hard refreshed, and that's all I've done. Everything works. But what happened? This has me really spooked about giving up my current live site, which is on another platform, for PS. Any ideas?
