look of featured products in category list?

I wonder if Ps 1.4.1 or 1.6.x has it already built in (didnt find a thing) or if there is already an easy solution availble in the forums to show products in category listing as on the startpage via featured products module?

 

 

I just stumbled about this page:

that has an option switch to change this look. I still do not know if that is preferrable but at least I think in standard theme (our shop is based on it) the category list wastes lots of space and could look better.

 

Do you know about an override/module or some easy code alteration to achieve this?
