Nemop tutorial covering adding per unit to product list page maybe relevant to what you are trying to do:

Hopefully someone with more PS development experience with product_list.tpl will chime in and help explain exactly what you're trying to accomplish. I'm interested as well in adding certain attribute values to product list page as well as the home page.
