Making newsletter sign up optional

Hi,

 

Bit of an odd one this....

 

I was under the impression that newsletter sign-up for new site users was optional, however I ran a test sign up and got this....

 

There are 2 errors

• newsletter is required.
  
• The field newsletter is required.
  

 

I tried commenting out:

 

 

{if isset($newsletter) && $newsletter}

<p class="checkbox">

<input type="checkbox" name="newsletter" id="newsletter" value="1" {if isset($smarty.post.newsletter) && $smarty.post.newsletter == '1'}checked="checked"{/if}>

<label for="newsletter">{l s='Sign up for our newsletter'}</label>

</p>

 

....in authentication.tpl file - but I just got an error 500.

 

Might be going the wrong way about it (I'm definitely wearing my novice tee-shirt) :-)

 

However, I'd really like to make newsletter sign up optional - feel it might be a deal-breaker for some, if it's forced.

scroll down and expand set required fields for this section

 

deselect newsletter

Ironically I think I noticed this a while back forgot all about it.
