photo problems

Hi all.. i'm new to all of this and have very very little knowledge on setting websites and ecommerce sites up. I am trying to set up my partners shop for her and decided on downloading prestashop 1.4.9.0.

 

i'm geting the hang of it very slowly but i am having a major nightmare when uploading the product photos. when i upload them in the BO the little thumbprint appears in the product information but when in the frontshop the images appear distorted and when hovering over the 2nd/3rd image of that product all i get is a big white square with a red x in the corner. If i then click on the photo's a seperate window pops up stating 'the requested content can not be loaded please try again later'

 

i have tried changing the image sizes in the BO but nothing changes.

 

I would be grateful for any help on solving this..
