How do you create a product category for authorized users only?

Is it possible to create a category of products that everyone can browse, but only members of a specific customer group (i.e. Authorized Buyers) can purchase from? I'm researching e-commerce systems for a client who wants to setup an education-related bookstore. My client trains educators on their teaching philosophy and when the educators complete the training program, they are authorized to purchase various teacher guides and teaching instruments. My client wants everyone to be able to view these items, but only "authorized" users to buy them.

 

This seems simple, but I cannot find anything like this. Does anybody else have a need like this? Can anybody point me in the direction where someone has created an extension that accomplishes this task or information on how I would go about creating such an extension myself.

Out of the box, only second part of this is possible. I.e. you can specify a category to be available to a certain group only and then the products (which are only in that category) can be viewed and bought by the members of that group only.

 

As defined, your issue requires a modification or a module. Try free modules and paid services forums and add-ons

There are several modules out there (we were the first!) to use catalog mode for non-logged in users.

Is it possible to assign catalog mode to a specific product category, but leave the others product categories open for normal sale? If not, what would it take to modify your module to allow this type of functionality? Thanks for your help.

my best advice is to search for a different module and if it's doesn't do exactly what you contact the developer.

Also you can assign things by group...i.e. you could create a group , let's call that group wholesalers...then only customers that log in and whose group is wholesalers would see the category. Problem will be the template (menu) not displaying the category when not group wholesaler...but that would be easier to fix than changing modules.

Also, in addition to what elpatron said disabling a category does not disable the products under that category anyways. One may not be able to see a category, but there is nothing stopping one from seeing the products in that category. Sadly developers do not intend to modify this behaviour.

The original poster may want to check to see if there is a way to do this in 1.5 which supports authorized and registered options in the back office.

 

I do not know if you can catalog mode by category.

 

IMHO, To do so would require updates to category and product db's. We avoid that sort of module and hope to see it in a future release (if not already in 1.5).
