Import Categories: Key field ID

I am trying to import categories; the main fileds from the source are:

- id ---> ???

- Name ---> alphanumeric key (number) of the categoriy

- Description ---> alphanumeric descripiton

Regarding the field " ID ":

 

a) What is the property (numeric, alphabetic or alphanumeric) of the field?

 

What is the funciton of the field?

 

c) Is the field compulsive (external) or can it be generated (interally) during the import process?
