European VAT module install help

I am trying to install the European VAT number module. When you enter the ID number you get the following:

identification number is incorrect or already used.

 

I'm not sure if this module does what i want it to do. We are using Prestashop 1.4.4.1.

I have a UK shop and I don't want VAT added to any European customers who have entered a valid vat number.

 

I have seen the error on other posts but can't see any solution. Does anyone know if this is what it does and how to fix it if it is.
