External links in virtual products

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

We are going to start offering our customers STL files for 3D printing. These are quite large files, around 200 MB per file, which are hosted on a Drive. The idea would be to provide the customer with a download link via email once they have made their purchase. Something like:

‘Thank you very much for your purchase, here is your download link’

Ideally, this link could also appear in the orders section of their customer profile, but this would be secondary.

I don't see how to configure this in Prestashop 8.2. How could we do it? Does anyone know of a suitable module?

Thank you very much for your help and best regards!

Hi there,

You can definitely sell and deliver large STL files in PrestaShop 8.2 — here’s a simple way to handle it.

Since your files are around 200 MB, it’s better to use an external download link (like Google Drive) instead of uploading them directly to PrestaShop, because the platform often has file size limits.

Here’s what you can do:

Go to your product in Catalog → Products, choose Virtual Product (Downloadable).

Instead of uploading a file, add your Google Drive link. Make sure the link is shareable so anyone with it can download.

The customer will get this link automatically in the order confirmation email.

If you also want the link to appear in the customer’s account orders, you might need a small module. Some good options are:

Virtual Product Download Manager – shows links in the customer account.

File Download Pro – supports external links, large files, and link expiration.

A couple of extra tips:

Test the whole flow with a dummy order first.

Make sure your Drive links don’t expire or have access restrictions.

Compress files if possible to make downloads faster.

With this setup, your customers will get their STL files smoothly, either by email or in their account.

Hope this helps!
