Sometimes the decision shouldn’t be based exclusively on business reasons, I’d say PHP compatibility is also a reason why you should update, especially when your hosting provider drops support for your current PHP version  and your current Prestashop version is not fully compatible with the next PHP version. 

For me, core performance improvements that increase the site speed (considerably) is also a reason I should update. Depending on what you are looking for, I don’t think the answer is carved on stone.
