Is there a way to add product customisation to the quick add page on a product?

Hi,
I'm hoping somebody can help me with this,
I have a site that sells products that have the option of adding a gift card messagae, at the moment this is compulsary accross the site for every product, however if i try to add a product direct from a category page and not a product page, the site does not allow me to add the custom message and i cannot add it to the basket without one.
Is there somewhere i've missed that turns this option on?
