The problem seems to be solved by putting back a previous version of the database.
The database probably pointed to the old image numbers (deleted by importing new ones), so no images were found.
How an old database version got active is a mistery. Probably my provider messed up but does not want to say so.
This post is not relevant to anyone so can be deleted.
