You need to: change db info in config file; update url info in db itself. Hint: go to phpmyadmin and search for your domain "abc.com". In that field, add "dev".

Depending on server running software (cpanel, parallels etc) you need to create full backup of your site and copy it to new dev place (dev.abc.com). Then do all the upgrade work, make sure you write all required changes and repeat the process on live server. The Right way to Upgrade Prestashop.
