We realized that from times to times customer accounts are created in duplicate (at the database it shows with the same creation date, same email, different ids...) This won't happen all the times but it happens. I use 1.7.6.0 but it happened on previous 1.7.x.x versions. On 1.6 never happened. I don't have guest check out enabled. Any hint?
