Thumbnails on combinations

By default when you assign images to combinations they no longer show as thumbnails.

So for example if a product is available in red, black and blue if you add the red image to the red combination, the blue image to the blue combination and so on, no thumbnails will display. 

What I need to do is show all of the thumbnails all of the time and when you select red the red thumbnail is highlighted but the blue and black thumbnail's are still there.

It's the way it works on most online store's so hopefully there's a way to do this. 

Does anyone know a solution for this?
