Combinations not working in Prestashop Muiltistore 1.6.1.16

I am trying to share products (art prints), across three different stores (retail, trade, distribution).

 and have set up product attributes and have defined which attributes appear per store:

print only (for Retail store)

Mounted (for trade and distribution)

Framed (for trade and distribution)

 

However, when I try and use either the "product combinations generator" or manually "add a combination" in either the trade or distribution stores  - on some occasions (not all), I only get one attribute (e.g. framed), come through. I try and add the other combinations but they just wont appear.
 

on the occasion that I do get to add a second combination, there is no default product, and it wont let me choose one,so the pricing doesn't work properly.
 

I have tried every combination of methods I can think of to get this right. Can someone please help?

so poor - where are you Prestashop. this is seriously making me look at alternatives.
