What's the best way to maintain a clone of your site for test purposes?

I've read similar posts on the forum but it looks they are pretty old and concern older versions of PrestaShop.

I was using a clone on a subfolder, erase it recently though, since I got a few orders coming from that subfolder, even having it excluded from search engines using .htaccess file.

Excluding it from search engines is not enough (not to mention that no one is sure they really follow that directive).

You need to password protect that directory using the well known .htpasswd file in conjunction with .htaccess.

I have ended up that the best way is to have the test.subdomain in maintenance mode, adding your ip each time you want to test things so that only you have access to it.
