Combinations Tab not updating combination location

Is this not a bug? I previously reported it as such but was told it was not.

When you change anything on an attribute/combination it clears the product attribute combination location field.

I understand a decision has been taken not to use this field any more but shouldn't the data be retained rather than wiped out for backwards compatibility.

I would like to fix this myself but haven't managed to work out how to do it yet.
