Catalog > Product: custom sorting for better catalog management

The vanilla sorting filter located in the back end is very limited...at least from what I've seen so far.

You have the following basic sorting options: (see attachement)
ID
image
Name
Reference
Category
Base Price
Final Price
Status

What if I need to sort based on some other parameter, like attribute or shipping price?
Being able to customize that search bar would be a very useful feature in helping one manage their catalog of products, especially of you have thousands of products.

I've seen some older articles on customizing this search bar using custom PHP and database values, but that seems kinda crazy for a sophisticated product management platform like this.

Anyone using a module to accomplish custom management filtering/sorting?
