Paypal official module problems on UK store

Since upgrading an older Prestashop to v1.6.1.13 I'm having real problems getting a Paypal module to work, and would appreciate some help

 

First I tried the standard Paypal module v3.11.4, which installs fine but after adding API credentials etc it sends me back to stage 1 every time.

 

Then I tried an older 3.10.2, this time I got errors of a different kind.

 

Then I read here  that UK support of the free module has been wound down, so I paid £135 for the Paypal direct payments module that appeared in my suggested addon list. But having installed that I see that appears to be US only and a different system altogether that required a Paypal Pro account. Mine's a regular business account, so that's not going to work either.

 

Searching the addons store for Paypal UK, I don't get a match.

 

Anyone here in the UK currently with a working Paypal  module on v1.6.1.13 I'd love to hear how you did it!
