Its time to migrate :)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Dean here, in front of www.dekom.co.rs, a webstore selling spare parts for home appliances.

Our website is currently running Prestashop version 1.5.4.1 and its live and generating results and its oriented to Serbian market so we sell mostly on our domestic market. Currently webiste is running on solid VPS.

Long time has passed and we gatthered a lot of reasons why should we migrate to new Prestashop even though our website is working.

Here are some of the reasons:

 1. Much better mobile platform support.

 2. More stable and faster then prevoius versions.

 3. More secure.

 4. Some bugs present in 1.5.x.x versions have been reported as no longer present in upper versions, like issues with

native PS search module for example...

 5. Need for a layout change and implementation of SSL as well as accepting online playments.
(until now we only did pay on delivery). It seems tha support for online playments is easier and better 1.6 and 1.7

 6. Overall better look and feel user and cusotmer experence.

What are your thoughts?

I have chosen word migrate before upgrade because I personally thing that migration is more suitable word when it comes to online software as process in most cases is not automated and human intervention is essential in order to keep everything working afterwards.

My first concern would be what version of PS to migrate to? Should we use 1.6.stable or 1.7.stable version?

I guess 1.7.stable have more sence but still I would like to ask the comunitly.

Also I would like to invite Bellini and other developres here at forums to send me their offers of helping us do this migration process. I think Bellini have some questionnaire to be filled before making us a quotation and if so please send us the document via PM, thank you.

A migration would be correct, if you had 2 stores and you were 'migrating' your data from 1 to the other.  That is certainly an option, and there are cart to cart services that can help you do that.

In your case, it sounds like you are just doing an upgrade of your existing platform.

Ignore PS v1.7, pretend it does not exist at this time.  Upgrade to PS v1.6.1.12, it will be maintained through at least 2018, which will hopefully be enough time for PS to get v1.7 somewhere better.

As for my questionaire, if you are interested in paid upgrade services, feel free to contact me via my website, and we can discuss further.

Email has been sent.

btw, Im saying migration even though its the same platform just different versions because much of the core code is also modified and any automated would probably fail :)

Maybe Im getting this wrong...
