Help please - Product order-box problem

Can anyone help me with a problem that is driving me crazy! (Prestashop 1.6.1.1)

 

I have a menu item that lists the products. As you know, at the top of the list is an option to choose GRID or LIST mode. These icons are on top right of the page. On the top left is the box to select the product order (eg order by price ascending). This was working fine for me up until a few days ago and now the formatting is all wrong. The GRID & LIST icons are on the left and the "order by" box is stretched across the width of the screen.

I have used Firefox developer / inspector tools to locate the CSS responsible but there doesn't seem to be anything that could cause this. There does seem to be some generated HTML code something like <span style="width: 972px;...> and this width value appears to change depending on screen resolution. It could be this that is setting the box width too wide, but where does the code come from and how can I change it?

 

I am completely stuck here!
