manufacturers by area

In my web site, not only is the manufacturer important but so is their location or area. Ideally, it would be a hierarchical structure like for products where there are sub categories. As an example, I would want to be able to choose products that originated in the US, then from among those the ones that are in California, then from those, the ones that are in Southern California or Northern California, etc. I can get close by putting the region in the supplier category (would change the heading name seen on the web page to area), but this is only one level deep and it must be entered each time a product is entered. Kind of a pain. Any one have any ideas. Thanks in Advance.
