CSV import works, but item page shows "hack attempt"

I'm playing with ways to batch update item quantities ...

Tried importing a CSV with the item IDs and quantity changes.
The quantity value in the DB is updated, but the item page is inaccessible with a "hack attempt" message" ... the message is cleared when I go in and manually change any part of the item details in the backend. But that is obviously impractical and defeats the point of a batch import/update.

I'm searching everywhere I can for more info, but if anyone has guidance it's much appreciated.

Or insight into a simple way to do batch quantity updates!??

don't import with accents and special chars.
