Can't switch backoffice language on demo site

I've been feeling my way around the back office demo. When I first logged in, the demo language was French ... after a bit of searching I found the flag icons next to the search bar. I changed the language to English, okay, hunky-dory. Started adding products/manufacturers etc. Suddenly it's all back en Francaise! To complicate matters, the flag icons are gone.

Thinking it might be a browser rendering issue, I checked the source code -- the divs to hold the icons are there, but no path to images -- just an empty div. I have tried in Safari, Chrome & Firefox, & can't switch languages in any of them.

It looks like someone modified the demo while I was logged in & broke it; once it reset the language picker became available again. Still, it would be good to know what's causing this -- several other people have posted about this, and none have ever been answered.
