What would put you off?

Hi folks,

So my candle store has been live now for just over a week.

www.wickimart.com

I am getting regular hits to the site but sadly no conversions.

I just want to get some feedback on what you think is good and bad about the site, or as a customer what would put you off from purchasing from me?

The things that I know need work doing so far, please let me know if you agree:

1. The slider images

2. The 2 images below the slider

Thanks and I look forward to hearing some feedback.

Ryan.

Hello

Well, I suppose a couple of things

I assume you are just selling to the UK market so I would go for a more English style in your words also a mobile number for a contact number looks a little odd

http://screencast.com/t/h9tRs5JJmpW

The Top Navigation is a bit confusing, "Home" has all your categories and then you have four categories that are all in the "Home" category

I am not sure that the skrill logo tells visitors what it is

Percentage (%) is in the wrong position

I was not able to any "Calls to Action" on the home page

Also, I could not see a reason to buy from you - are you the Cheapest? Biggest? Fastest? Best Quality? supplier of candles

anyway, just a couple of things I noticed

Hi Ryan.

I'm an interaction designer in my daily job, so I'll do my best to give you some hints and tips (-:

My post will only feature technical and functional user experience tips. I can't say anything to the marketing aspect of your products, pricing etc.

I like:

- The font in the top menu items - playful and fun

- The colour choice (orange with soft blue/green)

- The way the menu sticks up top when I scroll down.

- Your products

The feeling that your shop gives me can be be described as cosy, personal.

What I think you should look into is the user experience. The template you built / chose has a number of quirks that should be addressed:

- The slider image and the two below that should change. They look self-made, unprofessional. This counteracts that the website was carefully crafted with the colourscheme, font and general feeling. This must change as soon as possible.

- When the page is loaded I see only a menu and a slider. You are trying to sell products, they are only visible under the "fold", people need to scroll to see something

- Your logo is not a high-res image, it looks off and that makes it unprofessional - I can count the pixels so to say

- The sticky "reviews" button to the left doesn't match your colourscheme, it's too dark.

- The animations on your website are quirky and don't feel natural (hover over the menu directly above the slider - items pop up too fast). The 2 images below the slider are the same. I see a lot of stuff moving on "hover", and it isn't functional - it just looks cool. The end user doesn't really care about something looking cool - he wants to be able to calmly browse your website. I suggest removing the animation and just show the menu items, rather of this drop-in effect. A good rule of thumb is user experience always wins.

- Some functionality is only available for desktop, e.g. hovering the 2 images below the slider shows a click-through with an additional description. Tablets / mobile can't 'hover'. They only touch/tap/click.

- Please try to refrain from using 'scrollers' in the sidebar. Naturally the left navigation is an anchor for your visitors - that's why websites have their menu's at the left side. People naturally expect this to never change, at least not when it is loaded. The "specials" should not scroll. Rather just add a list of 3 specials, or just a single one per page. All the auto-scrolling content leaves the user no way to know where the most important content is (your products in the main page area).

General things I noticed:

- Due to all the animations in your template the page is not very responsive. If I scroll down all the way on the frontpage to the bottom, the page lags and 'hops' to the bottom. There's no smooth scrolling experience. This feels unnatural and counterintuitive. Removing a load of animations (that have no function other than to be cool) should help you out with this.

It might seem like i'm on a rant here, but all I want is to help you grow your website. If you need more help, or would like me to take a better look - let me know in a PM :)

Thanks a lot for all the feedback, don't worry I don't think you're on a rant haha.

All the points will be taken into consideration and will be hopefully sorted soon.

The only problem I can see that I will have is the slider and 2 images below it to make my products above the fold, the only way I can see of doing this is removing the slider all together.

Thoughts on that?

Thanks again.
